Joy Kirkpatrick

Joy Kirkpatrick

Entered Dual-Degree program: June 2014

Biography: Joy graduated cum laude from The Ohio State University with a BS in Chemistry and significant research experience as an undergraduate in their dental school.  She is currently in her last year of the DSTP and has recently matched at UNC-Chapel Hill for an Orthodontics Residency where she plans to pursue orthodontic research. Her PhD research incorporated a drug discovery approach to identify KDM4B inhibitors as a therapeutic for periodontal disease.  This project was quite successful leading to two patents, numerous presentations, and publications, as well as a newly funded R01 for her mentor.  Joy has presented 21 times either in an oral or poster format at various meetings from local to international.  She is an accomplished presenter as demonstrated by her 9 presentation awards.  She also was the recipient of two AADR student research fellowship awards, an ADA Dentsply Sirona Career Advancement Award, a TL1 fellowship, and an F30 research fellowship.

Joy is very active on campus, currently as President of the Student Government Association, volunteer in the Urban Garden, Treasurer of the CDM Class of 2021, and on numerous committees (e.g. University Teaching Award Selection Committee).  She previously served as Social Co-Chair of the MSTP/DSTP student group and has volunteered at numerous local schools and science fairs to discuss oral health issues. Joy likes to play video games in her free time and loves to create art.

Dissertation Advisor: Dr. Patrick Woster
