A native of Charleston, third-year dental student Traeannah Brown worked at MUSC as a clinical research coordinator before being accepted into the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine. She chose the dental school for its supportive clinic environment and the kindness of its staff and faculty.

“This was always a place that I knew was my first-choice school. They were really supportive when I came to shadow. When I frequently came through the clinic, everyone was always friendly. This supportive environment made this school number one,” Brown said.

When asked for advice for prospective students, Brown said, “Shadow your community dentist, find a mentor, preferably a local dentist or someone from the school you hope to attend. The more info you have, the better.”

She is also the recipient of the George C. McTeer Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship helps cover a portion of her tuition, providing her with more financial freedom. She expressed her gratitude by saying, “I am so thankful for the scholarship and glad this is an endowed scholarship so other people can get it as well.”

The scholarship is named for the late George C. McTeer Sr., D.M.D., Class of 1974, the first African American dentist to graduate from MUSC. Today, Brown is inspired by McTeer’s legacy of serving the underserved.

Her finances are now more manageable and Brown continues to balance her duties as a dental student, a member of the U.S. Navy, and a full-time mother.
