Supporting dental student success

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine named Lindsey Hamil, Ph.D., associate professor, to the new role of assistant dean of student success in October 2023.

Dr. Hamil joined the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine in 2010 as an educational specialist and instructor. She has since earned the rank of associate professor. Her role as an administrator grew into the director of education role, and now assistant dean of student success.

“Dr. Hamil is a proven change leader and a compassionate educator. Our educational experience is continually evolving through our outcome assessment process to prepare our students for the future of dentistry. Dr. Hamil’s valued experience will continue to ensure our student success for which we are deeply committed,” said Sarandeep Huja, D.D.S., Ph.D., dean of the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine.

Alongside her leadership, the college transitioned from Scantron to electronic testing; has shifted through multiple learning management systems; instituted a testing center to serve students with academic accommodations; and successfully supported the adoption of online learning throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, Dr. Hamil serves our faculty and students as the college’s behavioral support representative and provides case management to students in crisis. Her service to the college continues through her committee work, as chair of the outcomes assessment and educational technology committees; vice chair of the curriculum committee; and her leadership of several accreditation sub-committees. One of Dr. Hamil’s greatest professional joys is her time spent calming nerves and congratulating students as they prepare to cross the stage on the day of their white coat and honors convocation ceremonies.

The Office of Academic Affairs provides support and guidance to our students throughout their dental school experience. Led by Tariq Javed, D.M.D., vice dean and associate vice dean for Academic Affairs, the administration’s support of our students and the collegiality among our learners and educators, are hallmarks of what we affectionately refer to as the CDM Family.
