Office of Academic and Student Affairs
We provide support and guidance to our students throughout their dental school experience. Our team of professionals in the Office of Academic and Student Affairs is dedicated to helping each dental student achieve optimal professional growth and development. They serve students through a wide variety of activities. For example, in consultation with other key stakeholders, we plan most major student events from D1 orientation through graduation.
We participate in the development and administration of many policies that impact the quality of life and campus resources available to dental students. We provide support and advisement to student council and all recognized student groups. Our goal is to be of service to you and so we welcome all opportunities to assist you in becoming a truly outstanding dental professional.
In addition to our dedicated team within the College of Dental Medicine, MUSC offers many resources for all students, including Student Life and a Behavioral Support Intervention Team.

Tariq Javed, D.M.D., D.D.S., is the associate dean for Academic & Student Affairs and professor for the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) from Punjab University, his Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) from MUSC, his Master of Science in Periodontics from University of Minnesota, and Master of Science in Dentistry with a focus in preventive dentistry and periodontics from Indiana University.
Dr. Javed has been at MUSC since 1977. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology (ABP) and has served in national leadership roles, including commissioner for the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and as a member of the American Dental Association’s Council on Dental Education and Licensure.
His academic career reflects a commitment to curriculum development, student mentorship, and advancing dental education through research.
