FLOSS (Facilitating Long-term Oral health SkillS)

It is well known that oral health is associated with increased risk of a variety of systemic conditions, such as diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Oral health influences how someone talks, chews, eats and tastes food, and behaves socially. Unfortunately, oral health is generally very poor among residents of long-term care (LTC) facilities where chronic gingivitis, cavities, missing teeth, and chewing difficulties are very common. Many of these conditions lead to discomfort and pain for the affected residents.

The broad, long-term goal of this project is to improve the skills of Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) in long term care facilities in order to improve early identification and intervention of oral health problems as well as support proper daily oral health management of their residents.

This project was funded through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
